On loans

Like many people, I’ve found myself unemployed for a while in this lousy economy. Unfortunately, it hit just as I’d maxed out my credit cards paying for school; as a result, I’ve got mountains of debt and no way to pay for it. Things will get even worse in six months, when I need to start making payments on my student loans.

I was very excited to hear about the ongoing movement to forgive student loan debt; it really makes a lot of sense! Unfortunately, even though a lot of people support it, it needs to get a LOT more attention before it gets anywhere in Congress. Basically, it calls on the federal government to forgive all outstanding student loans, essentially a massive tax cut targeted at the people most likely to go out and spend money. If you’re interested in supporting this common-sense plan, you can do so by writing your representative or senator.

I’ve also looked into getting a personal loan from my local bank to lower the interest rates I’m paying; unfortunately, it’s not easy to get more money when you’re broke, unemployed, and in debt! No doubt I’d have more luck if I had a job, but then, if I had a job I wouldn’t be struggling as much to pay off my bills!

Right now I’m getting unemployment benefits, but these basically just cover the interest on my debt, so I’m not getting anywhere. I’m just praying that I find a good job before the benefits run out; I don’t really have a lot of faith in Congress to keep passing unemployment extensions.

I’ve been sending out a lot of resumes, but not having much luck; most places don’t even bother to write back. If it’s this bad for someone with advanced degrees in computer science, I don’t even want to know what it’s like for someone without much education! On the other hand, maybe it’s easier..I know people with a lot less education than me who’ve been able to easily get jobs for which I’m way overqualified. Another issue, of course, is that I can’t work for minimum wage, as I wouldn’t make enough to pay my living expenses, let alone my student loan debt.

Wish me luck…I’m going to need it!
