If your dog spends a good deal of time outdoors you may want to look into insulating his dog kennel, especially if you live in an area where the temperature is extreme with it being either very cold during winter or very hot during summer.
It is possible to buy already insulated dog houses and while they do cost a little extra it is worth spending that for the comfort of your dog. However, if you already have a dog kennel or if you are planning on building one you may want to look into insulating it yourself.
You can insulate an outdoor dog kennel in a very similar manner to the way that you would insulate a room in your home. All you need to do is buy some sheets of insulating material, attach them to the inside of the kennel and then cover the installation with cement sheeting or plywood. It is important to ensure that your dog is not able to chew through the covering and come in contact with the installation.
Another alternative which works quite well is to add external installation. This is advantageous in that you do not need to disassemble the dog kennel in order to put in installation, in other words it is very easy to put up. Some people use foil tarpaper or external installation with colored plaster etc. if you are interested in going this route it would be a good idea to check with your local home improvement store to see what they have available.
There are also other things you can do to help maintain a better temperature or within your dog kennel that does not require installing insulation. These can be done in addition to insulating a kennel or can just be very helpful tips for areas where the weather is not so extreme that the dog does spend a good deal of time outside.
If you want to keep the heat inside the kennel is a good idea to paint your kennel where the dark colored paint or use dark word on the outside of the kennel.
The reverse holds true if you were trying to keep the interior of the kennel cool. Paint your kennel with a light colored lead free paint.
It is also important to position your kennel properly. Make sure that wind, rain or snow cannot enter in through the kennel door way. If you live in a fairly sunny location ensured that there is plenty of shade around the kennel. Some people like to use movable kennels so that they can place the dog kennel in the sunshine or in warmer areas of the yard during winter and then move it to a more shaded area during summer.
Make sure the entrance to the kennel is not overly big. Make it big enough for the dog to get through.
It is also a very good idea to build flooring into the kennel so that the dog is kept up off the ground at all times.
